Friday's Contest Winner!

Congratulations to Saleena for sending us the funniest holiday story. Here is what she sent:
"My family will probably never let me forget the Christmas Eve that I caught my hair on fire. It was just last Christmas. We were waiting on company. I decided to light some candles. Then I got a bright idea to set a large one down in the fireplace. While holding the lit candle in my right hand, I bent down to move the grate. I smelled something strange. Hmm. My daughter yelled, "Mom your hair's on fire!" I realize there was a flame on the side of my head! As I'm smacking myself in the head and yelling for my husband to do something, he and my children are laughing so hard that they can't even speak! What help they were! I not only had to put my own flammable hair out, but my sister in law who arrived shortly after, gave me a candle for Christmas! So,as you probably can guess the laughter at my expense started again!"

Thanks Saleena for sharing that funny moment with us (although probably not to you at the time) . We also want to thank all the other people who sent stories as well. There was one other story that was funny and gave us the creeps at the same time. It definitely deserves an honorable mention. We thought we'd share it with you. You'll see what we mean!

Jolanthe wrote:

"Our Story of “Why Fake Trees are the BEST Trees!”

"I grew up with the wonderful tradition of cutting down our own trees…hiking through snow up to our knees in search of that perfect one. When really after 3 hours of cold, wet snow – anything will do. My husband and I decided our first year of marriage to continue in that tradition and envisioned many happy years of visiting the tree farm, or trekking out in the woods to pick out our family tree. So our first Christmas, we decided to visit our local tree farm in search of the perfect tree.

It had been an unusually warm fall/winter season, which should have our first indicator to prepare for some….well, company.

We found a lovely 8 foot tree (since we had vaulted ceilings) and cut the tree, had it shaken (to make sure any dead needles (and possibly critters) fell out, strapped the tree on and traveled home to decorate our beautiful find.

Bliss, I tell you. Pure bliss.

Almost one week went by with our lovely tree fully decorated in our living room, white lights twinkling. One night before I was getting in bed, I saw a strange shadow – almost a flicker, on the wall. It looked like a wisp of smoke. I quickly ran to the tree, searched and sniffed it, but didn’t see any fire.

But I did see a teeny, tiny bug. He was so cute.

And then I saw all of his brothers and sisters emerging from the center of the tree. Hundreds and hundreds of them. Baby praying mantis’ had hatched from our tree and were crawling out to sit and warm on the white lights of the tree.

Sweet, no?

My husband and I quickly yanked all the ornaments and lights off the tree and threw it outside onto the deck and we pulled the vacuum cleaner out to madly suck up all the little critters that were now climbing the walls to our vaulted ceiling – towards the warmer air. We were standing on the back of the couch, trying desperately to reach the ones that were high, high up. Protected species or not, those critters were getting out of my house!

We later found some “safe” pesticides, sprayed the tree down and let it stay nice and cold outside for a few days. We removed the rest of the nest and then brought the tree back inside to decorate it. Again.

Two days later, another nest hatched.

We were pros at stripping a tree, so it landed on the deck in record time and we didn’t even bother taking the lights off this time. We just figured the neighbor’s kids would love the sight and bought new lights.

And a fake tree to go along with them.

Despite the fact that I pictured out family taking an annual trip to the tree farm, we still do make a trip…to our basement. To pull out our beautiful pre-lit 8 foot tree. Which can be put together in less than 5 minutes.

No bugs included."

I have to say that story gave us the creeps but it was funny thinking about you guys trying to strip the tree as fast as you could, TWICE!

We want to thank EVERYONE who participated in our contests this week. We hope you enjoyed them and will check back to our blogs often as we plan on doing more in the future!

Contest # 5 Friday

We have had you use your memory, test your poetic skills, and even upload pictures of your Christmas trees this week. Today is the last day of our week of contests and we wanted it to be worth even more for all your efforts this week. Today's winner will receive a $25 ecard to Target, Wal-Mart, PayPal, OR Barnes and Noble! All you have to do is tell us about the funniest thing that has ever happened to you or your family during the holidays. This could be about anything pertaining to the holidays such as something that happened while you were shopping, baking, opening presents, visiting relatives, etc. We all have some memorable moments in our past and we'd love to hear about yours! Email us your stories at info@fortunatelyforyoubooks.com . The one that makes us laugh the hardest (and we could use it after this long week) gets the prize!

~Heidi

Contest #3 Winner

There were so many great ACRONYMS to choose from. I do not know why we don't use this tool more often. It is a great way to record thoughts. They give guidance to those who need a creative kick, and boundaries to those souls who can write and write but need focus. I found myself jotting down things with these three words all day. Only mine didn't turn out as well as the ones that were sent in. Here are some honorable mentions that I liked:

Heidemarie sent this one-
Christ is the reason we can give!
Home is the place we learn to care as we live!
Right now is a good time to learn something new.
If you enjoy learning as you live, you'll fit right in with our crew.
Surely something we'll be able to learn from you;
Teaching and learning go hand in hand,
Maybe therefore we can help you stand.
And cause it's winter we might long for the sun,
Still, till next year we can have a whole lot of holiday, snowy fun!

Here is Lara's-
Chaotic
Hectic
Religious
Inspiring
Soul-feeding
Traditional
Monumentous
Adoring
Spiritual

and thoroughly FUN!!!!!

But the winning ticket goes to Cathy for her acronym that shows just where her kids got that creative spirit! School sure did change up for the month for her as the kids seem to be rifling through the recipe box in hopes that baking will replace two crucial classes. This made me chuckle. And Cathy even gave us an extra acronym just for fun. Way to go, Cathy! Maybe you should buy a kids cookbook with your money! They seem anxious to get in the kitchen.
Here is the winning acronym-
Children
Holding
Recipes
In hopes that
Sugar cookies will count
Toward
Math
And
Science

and here was her freebie acronym that wasn't really theme related but fun-
Fat
Elves
Singing
Tunes
In
Velvet
Espadrilles

Thanks for playing, ladies.

Contest #3 Wednesday

No luck here today! This will take some thought and your creativity. Make an acrostic from any of these words:
CHRISTMAS
HOLIDAYS
FESTIVE

The theme is "Homeschooling in December". I chose this because I am interested in seeing what school looks like in your home in this crazy month. Do you keep the same schedule? Do you try new things? Do you do a whole year's worth of art class in one month? Are you finding a lot of your subjects are falling under the "lifeskills" section?

School in my home changes. My sons have figured out how everything applies to education. "Mom, this counts as.........." . Sometimes they are right on the money, and other times I have to say "no, although that attempt may apply to creative writing if you put it on paper!" My youngest two sons are having mostly music this week. At one point I was laughing so hard I couldn't breathe. You would never have recognized Feliz Navidad, but boy, they sure played with some gusto there. Other times I wanted to whack them over the head. They were willing participants. It got them out of math class and it changed up our schedule enough to be festive.

Pick your acrostic and share how your school looks this month!
Winner receives a $15 ecard to their choice of the following stores:
Barnes and Noble
Target
Walmart
PayPal
(note- Friday's winner receives $25!)

Winner of Tuesday's Contest

Congratulations to devildogwife, winner of a $15 ecard to one of these great places: Target, Wal-Mart, PayPal, or Barnes and Noble! Note: Her husband and daughter put this tree up because she had surgery. How thoughtful and what an outstanding job they did. The train below your tree put you above the rest for me! My business partner gave you the thumbs up because her son is a Marine so she heartily gave her "OORAH" to you.

I have no doubt that, should I have been absent, my Christmas Tree would have missing limbs, burned out lights, broken bulbs, and some kind of sticky substance sticking to the needles. Yep, that's my family.

Thank you to all of those who entered your tree for consideration! It was enjoyable to look at them all because they ALL were so very beautiful (and might I add, this was a very hard thing to choose). Please enter today's contest and it will test your creative abilities. Check back and play all week long at FFYB's Holiday Blog Contest!

Contest #1 Winner

Congratulations to Kathlyn Carico! You were the first one to get the most answers correct.

Kelly will be contacting you this morning to find out where you would like to spend your money!

Thanks for playing!

I am not sure what this says about us, but here are the answers:

Heidi- Santa Clause is Coming to Town, ladyfingers, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

Kelly- White Christmas, Peanut Blossoms, Silver Bells

Shannon- Elf, Kolaczkis, Santa Baby

It is kind of funny, as Heidi is our proper one, Kelly is our traditional one, and I seem to be the loosey goosey of the group.

Contest Day #2 TUESDAY

Nothing puts us in a holiday mood better than a beautifully decorated Christmas tree. The memories we have from being together with our family and putting up all of our favorite ornaments is something we think of every year while putting up this year's tree.

For our contest today (TUESDAY), send us a picture of your Christmas Tree. Email it to:
If you haven't put your tree up yet, a picture from previous years will be just fine! We will pick our favorite tree picture and email you Wednesday Morning if you are the winner ! The winner gets his/her choice of a $15 ecard from either Target, Barnes and Noble, Wal-Mart, or PayPal.

Here is a list of the abilities you will need to win something this week!

1st day- luck
2nd day- documentation
3rd day- creativity
4th day- memory
5th day- humor

Previous Winners are welcome to play again in any contest. You have until MIDNIGHT EST to get your entries in each day. A new contest will be posted between midnight and 8 A.M.
